Statistics

Over the last ten years there has been a 10% increase in overweight and obese students as determined by Body Mass Index (BMI) in Waterloo Community Schools. During the 2001-02 school year, 35% of students were either overweight or obese while in 2010-11, this rate rose to 45%. Even more alarming are the 2010-11 rates for African American females. The percent of African American girls overwieght or obese is at 55%.  These growing rates of BMI place students at increased risk for Type 2 diabetes and numerous other chronic health conditions.  It is projected that due to rising obesity rates, children in school now will be the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
