Welcome to Cedar Valley Go 5210!
The incidence of childhood obesity is rising at an alarming rate both nationally and locally. During the 2010-2011 school year 45% of Waterloo children were overweight or obese. This has risen significantly from 2001 when only 35% were found to be in this category. More Info »
- The impact of this childhood epidemic is significant and may have lifelong health and economic implications.
- Type 2 Diabetes among children has been increasing at a rate that parallels the increase in childhood obesity rates.
- High blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels are all on the rise in obese children.
- The incidence of sleep apnea with associated bedwetting, poor school performance, and fatigue are also more apt to occur in obese children.
One of the most damaging effects is the potential impact on the obese child’s self-esteem, increasing the likelihood of him or her becoming an obese adult (medicinenet.com, 2008. Accessed November 3, 2008 at www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=78863)
