About Cedar Valley Go 5210!

In an effort to combat the growing problem of childhood obesity, a team of agencies named “Cedar Valley Go 5210! Fit Families Alliance” has been formed under the leadership of the Black Hawk County Health Department. The focus of this group of concerned professionals is to get the word out about childhood obesity and highlight strategies and programs designed to improve healthy habits and lifestyles of the entire family. The committee serves as a central communication clearinghouse for assembling and dissemination of information to further the overall mission of improving family health, including the prevention and reduction of obesity.  The Cedar Valley Go 5210! Peoples Community Health Clinic is a federally-funded community health center that is committed to improving the health status of the residents of the Cedar Valley, especially the medically underserved, through a quality primary care system.  Care is provided to anyone regardless of age, race, nationality, employment, health insurance, income or location of residence.  We believe quality health care should be affordable to all and use a sliding fee scale based on income.  No one is denied services because of inability to pay.  We accept all insurance coverage including Medicaid, Medicare and Hawk-I.

We provide a full range of primary care (both medical and dental) for children and adults by board-certified providers in internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, gynecology, and dentistry.  Laboratory and x-ray are on site.  Interpreters are available for those who do not speak English.  Counseling services are available for family concerns, substance abuse problems, nutritional concerns, and homelessness.

The Operation Threshold Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) serves infants and children under the age of five, pregnant women, breastfeeding women for up to one year postpartum and women who are not breastfeeding for six months postpartum. Their family income must be under 185% of the federal poverty level.  Each participant receives free nutrition counseling from a Registered Dietitian or a Registered Nurse every three months and vouchers for free supplemental healthy foods to be used at their local grocery store.

The Waterloo Community School district provides a full range of educational services to students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. These services include regular and enriched academic education, special education for students with special needs, career education, and numerous individualized programs such as specialized instruction for at-risk students and for limited-English-speaking students.

Waterloo is one of the 10 largest school districts of Iowa’s 377 public school systems. The enrollment is approximately 10,300 students. The district currently operates two regular and one alternative high school, four middle schools and twelve elementary schools. The district has approximately 840 full-time equivalent (FTE) professional employees (including administrators and teachers) and 540 FTE support staff. Approximately 40% of the teaching staff have advanced degrees.

The Waterloo Community School District includes the cities of Waterloo, Evansdale, Elk Run Heights, Gilbertville, and Raymond, part of the city of Cedar Falls, and certain unincorporated areas in Black Hawk County. The district is located entirely within Black Hawk County and encompasses approximately 150 square miles.
